VFCast! Season 5 Episode 4 – Two Men, One Boy

Title: Batman/Starman/Hellboy Issue 1 & 2
Author: James Robinson
Artist: Mike Mignola
Publisher: DC & Dark Horse
Release Date: January 1999

This is a crossover book drawn by a very popular creator and written by a cult favorite about the most popular character in comics and his dudebros. James Robinson has a very devoted fan following (Cabel and Leland included) and Mike Mignola is an extremely influential writer/artist.

So why can’t I find anything about it online? Seriously, the Wikipedia entry isn’t even important enough to get tagged with the “it’s just a synopsis” tag. It is so unimportant that no one (us included) even cared to mark that it was a bad entry.

Why is that? This should be an important book, right? There are big things happening. It is Starman’s first multiverse crossover. It is Mignola’s first time to professionally draw Batman. It has semi-false advertising on the cover.

We enjoyed it, so I guess all my confusion is somewhat moot.

Meh.

VFCast! Season 5 Episode 3 – A Boy and his Dog

Title: Battlepug Vol. 1: Blood and Drool
Author: Mike Norton
Artist: Mike Norton
Publisher: Dark Horse
Release Date: July 4, 2012
It's a picture of a small girl riding a dog.

No time for pug, Dr. Jones!

Sometimes, a man must stand alone. He must face the demons of production cycles and deadlines while his mates… do other things. This week that man was John, and boy-howdy did he do a bear’s job of the thing!

The gulf between print comics and online media is becoming smaller than a stereotypical and slightly racist Asian child sidekick. That being said, it’s always interesting to see how page-a-day serials from the web translate into printed volumes. If the glimpse I got of Battlepug is representative of the whole, John has found something wicked-awesome to chat with you guys about.

If you like babes, bears, barbarians, and especially battle pugs (whatever those are) you need to get VFCast! Season 5 Episode 3 in your ear-holes so hard.

VFCast! Season 5 Episode 2 : Low Hanging Fruit

Title: Chew Volume 1 : Taster’s Choice
Author: John Layman
Artist: Rob Guillory
Publisher: Image Comics
Release Date: December 8, 2009

It is strange to really dislike something so universally beloved. It is also strange to talk to your buddies, with very similar tastes about it. You start out really gentle, like… “Dude, what did you think of, Chew? Did you like it?”

And he doesn’t want to ruin your good vibes, if you dug on it, so he is all like “Well I thought it had …. problems…”

And then you feel a gush of relief. “Yeah, some. I think i  can name a large number, actually.’”

There are podcasts out there that love to hate the books they read. We do not. We have more fun-loving on something than hating on it. The podcast is a lot of fun. It is worth the effort. We have thought about only podcasting on things we can give a positive review to.

We don’t. Somehow it feels dishonest to do that. I can’t quite put my finger on it….

Still, there is a sense of relief when you realize your friends hate the same things you do, rest of the world be damned.

But Agent Chu digs me, don’t you, Chu?

Season 5 Episode 1: Hey kid, Do you like Magic?

Title: Hellblazer: Volume 1, Original Sins
Author: Jamie Delano
Artist: Rich Veitch
Publisher DC Comics (Vertigo Imprint)
Release Date: March 11, 2011

The world is what it is. Leland, The Bear, and I often disagree. We often hate things the other two love. We disagree about the role of government, non how non-pronouned individuals fit into a society with fairly rigid gender roles and the relative merits of semi-vigilante law keeping by 501-c(3) organizations.

We all agree that the world basically is as It is. Our wishes can’t change it into something IT  is not. You can wish to elemental forces; you can wish to your creator in the sky; you can even wish to the unique and exotic power of crystals; None of your wishing can cause the World to change.

It is dangerous to believe otherwise.  When you do you undermine your ability to perceive the world as it is. Worse you your ability to engage the world with the tools we have. Your rationality, your wild essence, and even your physical and instinctual understanding of the world are all weakened when you refuse to engage what is in front of you; when you ignore what logic, reason, and experimentation have shown to be true.

Don’t be John Constantine, boys and girls. He is a worse version of you.

Also he is very, very sad.

I’m enjoying showing you the worst costumes in comic movies/tv shows. I’ve watched these things; had to have my eyes burned, now you do too! Also I’m going to, as I do exactly 37% of the time, talk about something that is not the podcast itself in the podcast write-up.

I am convinced that if you make a comic book movie but are embarrassed by  subject matter that your are “inspired by” you cannot make the best version of the film. This principle extends to all parts of the undertaking. If you are making a Superman TV show with a “no flights, no tights” rule, when you actually get around to having costumes, they won’t be great.

The same problems exists, I think, for the Daredevil movie. We know that tights based costumes can look rad, and Daredevil had a nice budget, so I think we can safely blame creative choices for how silly Affleck looks in the costume.

Hollywood: Stop giving adaption contracts to teams that dislike the thing they are adapting. Fans do it better.

VFCast! Season 4 Episode 8: Dropping Beats as Deep as the Marianas Trench

Aquaman - Smallville

Title: Aquaman Vol.1: The Trench
Author: Geoff Johns
Artist: Ivan Reis, Joe Prado
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: May 21, 2013

The above picture exists just to share how stupid I think Aquaman’s costume is. It is not that i think ol’ AM is a dumb character, I really don’t. I think the character has a really solid premise. People say he is underpowered, but no one said that about Grace! Arthur Curry is at least as powerful as her, plus the cool utility powers…  Who am I kidding? I was literally the only person reading Outsiders in the early 2000s; you don’t know who Grace is!

Grace was a tattooed First Nations woman, with Amazonian ties (I think.) Aquabadass, on the other hand, is an Atlantian warrior who renounced his kingship in order to serve humanity… Seriously, we should write a Grace and Aquaman monthly. We could call it Bruisers; perhaps if Bane and the Hawks agreed to be really good they could come too. This would be a comic book about punching people in the face.

Yes. Batman can come too if he wants. Who am to tell the Dark Knight where he can’t go?

Release Date: March 1, 2011

Leland and I could spend infinity time making fun of strange conspiracy theories on the Interwebs! Seriously, guys, there is a whole group of people who are 100% convinced that we had a cultural exchange program with the aliens from a planet called Serpo. The whole damn brunt of this theory seems to go like this. “

Dude 1: “Hey Dude 2! I read a great book today. It scribed by da ACC, yo! What if Aliens visited us, man?”

Dude 2: “I am totally not about to fuck with you, Dude 1! That totally happened. Arthur Cdawg totes has an inside man in the gover’mint!”

Dude 1: *Mind Blown*

Dude 1: *Relaxes for a minute and then founds serpo.org*

Oh! If you are a Serpo believer, and you think the facts stand for themselves, email us, ask to join a podcast, or post a comment on the blog. Convince me, and I’ll convince Leland for you. It is well known that so goes Leland so goes the legitimacy of your conspiracy theory. [Your conspiracy theory is irrelevant. -L]

If you feel like we shorted you on Nick Spencer research listed to our last podcast. If you feel like we shorted you on Joe Eisma research, than you can suck it, you got great humor in its place!

Can anyone tell me anything about this TV show “Bedlam” that keeps gumming up my searches for Nick Spencer’s creepy comic book of the same name? The posters are so very, very generic that I can’t tell anything about the show. It looks a bit like a lawyer/police procedural show, but there is that one creepy dude in the mirror that suggests it might actually be a horror show. It wasn’t the subject of our podcast, and really didn’t touch on the thing we where supposed to be researching, so I did this rant instead. There are too many people in its posters for it to be a adaptation of Spencer’s work, I think.
